About Scrubs. Any medical uniform consisting of a short-sleeve shirt and pants are known as "scrubs". Scrubs may also include additional uniform apparel like long-sleeved warm-up jackets and caps. The name scrubs was derived from their use, as scrubs are the medical uniforms worn by surgeons and nurses when "scrubbing in" for surgery.

Today, the wearing of medical scrub uniforms has extended outside of the hospital operating room. In fact, nearly all medical care personnel in the United States wear some form of scrubs as a uniform, including staffers in doctors and dentists offices. These types of scrubs are available in many colors, patterns and styles. Scrubs featuring cartoon characters and cheerful prints are common in pediatricians offices, while prints for holidays can be seen in any medical office. Some hospitals use scrub color as a way of quickly identifying a staff member's department, e.g. blue scrubs for Surgery, pink scrubs for Labor and Delivery, green scrubs for Emergency, and so forth. A few hospitals extend this convention to non-staff and visitors in order to make these people clearly identifiable. For example, visitors may wear yellow scrubs, while staffers wear blue scrubs. Scrubs worn in surgery, in contrast, are almost always colored solid light green, light blue or a light green-blue shade. Outside of surgery a doctor's uniform tends to be street clothes with a white lab coat.
